L’Empire des signes de Roland Barthes ou l’Utopie nipponne

Intervention au colloque « Penser les différences » à l’École Normale Supérieure de Meknès, Université Moulay Ismaïl, les 23 et 24 avril 2025

Introduction

En délaissant toute vision égocentrique, Barthes, dans L’Empire des signes, exprime librement sa fascination pour la singularité de la tradition japonaise. Il transforme son expérience subjective au pays du Soleil-Levant en une occasion euphorique d’explorer les limites de l’inconnu et de découvrir les mystères d’un système géographiquement et culturellement éloigné. L’Empire des signes se présente comme un essai aux accents fantaisistes, un recueil d’impressions de voyage où Barthes se place à la fois en position d’observateur sensible et de chercheur.

À l’image de l’archipel visité, le texte se distingue par sa structure parcellée et éclatée. L’écriture fragmentaire apparaît comme la forme la plus adéquate pour illustrer le foisonnement des éléments exotiques que lui offre le Japon. Si nous proposons d’étudier L’Empire des signes de Roland Barthes dans le cadre du colloque Penser la différence, c’est précisément parce qu’il met le lecteur dans la situation, à la fois étrange et prometteuse, d’un individu qui choisit de s’extraire momentanément de son milieu afin d’aller vers l’autre et d’appréhender son monde dans toute sa particularité. Dans cette optique, trois axes apparaissent particulièrement pertinents :

1. Le Japon comme « utopie du désirable » [1]
2. Le charme de la différence
3. Le contact avec l’autre comme expérience déstabilisatrice

1. L’utopie du désirable

Dès les premières pages de son livre, Barthes avertit que son discours sur le Japon prendra une dimension fictionnelle. En faisant abstraction « d’immenses zones d’ombre (à savoir le Japon capitaliste, l’acculturation américaine, le développement technique) » [2], l’écrivain signale au lecteur que le monde exploré sera étroitement lié aux sèmes de l’exploration, de la rencontre et de l’harmonie. L’essai dégage un sentiment de plénitude, voire un souffle utopique, dans la mesure où toutes formes de conflits ou de désarroi en sont bannies. L’accent est mis avant tout sur l’art de vivre raffiné du peuple japonais (nourriture, habillement, organisation urbaine).

Dans une caractérisation esthétique méliorative, Barthes insiste sur les pratiques artistiques typiquement japonaises : l’art poétique et l’art dramatique. À vrai dire, le haïku cristallise pour lui l’idéal d’une écriture poétique parfaite, distinguée par sa simplicité, sa concision et sa force suggestive. Issu d’une sensorialité exacerbée, il constitue une écriture du fantasme qui fixe, en quelques mots, des impressions fugitives susceptibles de stimuler l’imagination du lecteur. En second lieu, Barthes évoque brièvement le bunraku, ce spectacle hybride alliant théâtre, marionnette et récit chanté, qui suscite son intérêt par sa dimension réflexive. Ces exemples se multiplient dans le livre et dessinent le Japon comme un espace hospitalier et exceptionnel, un lieu où les fantasmes créateurs se réalisent : une sorte de locus amoenus où l’écrivain se sent « protégé contre la bêtise, la vulgarité, la vanité, la modernité, la nationalité, la normalité » [3].

2. Le charme de la différence

Dans sa fugue jubilatoire, Barthes devient l’observateur-scripteur des phénomènes sociaux, artistiques et folkloriques propres au Japon. Ses descriptions ethnographiques, accompagnées de photographies et de dessins, permettent au lecteur de visualiser des coutumes culturelles singulières, étranges et donc fascinantes. Il écrit ainsi :

« Il se trouve que, dans ce pays, l’empire des signifiants est si vaste, il excède à tel point la parole, que l’échange des signes reste d’une richesse, d’une mobilité, d’une subtilité fascinantes, en dépit de l’opacité de la langue, parfois même grâce à cette opacité. » [4]

Pour Barthes, le Japon est un lieu d’envoûtement et de ravissement des sens, où les scènes les plus banales deviennent images de fiction, et où le quotidien se donne comme spectacle inhabituel et saisissant. L’absence d’échange verbal laisse place à d’autres formes de communication, plus subtiles, qui invitent l’écrivain à adopter une posture d’écoute et d’ouverture à l’autre. Comme le souligne Éric Marty :

« Barthes, dans L’Empire, ne se place pas du tout dans la position du sujet occidental, cérébral, autiste et fermé : il est en communication totale avec le Japon par les sons, les rythmes, les silences, le mouvement, le bruissement de la langue. » [5]

Barthes se réjouit de l’inintelligible qui l’entoure. Il n’y éprouve pas d’exclusion : au contraire, il y trouve une forme de libération face au familier. Cette ouverture pave la voie à de nouvelles réflexions et à des questionnements inédits. Ainsi écrit-il :

« Ce qui peut être visé, dans la considération de l’Orient, ce ne sont pas d’autres symboles, une autre métaphysique, une autre sagesse ; mais la possibilité d’une différence, d’une mutation, d’une révolution dans la propriété des systèmes symboliques. Il faudrait faire un jour l’histoire de notre propre obscurité, manifester la compacité de notre narcissisme, recenser, au long des siècles, les quelques appels de différence que nous avons pu parfois entendre et qui consistent à toujours acclimater notre inconnaissance de l’Asie. » [6]

3. Le contact avec l’autre comme expérience déstabilisatrice

Loin d’être un simple voyage d’éblouissement, l’affrontement à une altérité aussi lointaine et différente que le Japon constitue pour Barthes un véritable vacillement des repères. Selon ses mots :

« Le Japon m’a mis en situation d’écriture. Cette situation est celle-là même où s’opère un certain ébranlement de la personne, un renversement des anciennes lectures, une secousse du sens, déchiré, exténué jusqu’à son vide insubstituable, sans que l’objet cesse d’être signifiant, désirable. L’écriture est, en somme, à sa manière, un satori : le satori (l’événement zen) est un séisme plus ou moins fort qui fait vaciller la connaissance, le sujet. » [7]

Mais malgré cet ébranlement, le contact avec l’autre dans sa différence permet à l’écrivain de suspendre ses jugements et d’adopter une vision distanciée, propre à reconsidérer les évidences de sa culture d’origine. La différence culturelle aiguise ainsi son esprit critique : c’est en comparant Orient et Occident qu’il comprend mieux sa propre langue, la gastronomie européenne ou l’organisation urbaine. Grâce au voyage et à la rencontre de l’altérité, tout ce qui lui était familier se trouve remis en question. L’écrivain-explorateur s’émancipe alors des attaches occidentales réductrices et découvre d’autres manières de parler, de se comporter, de créer, d’exister. Le texte est donc animé par une ambition interculturelle qui entraîne le lecteur hors de son milieu, afin d’élargir et d’enrichir sa connaissance des cultures.

Conclusion

En agençant texte et image dans une relation symbiotique, Barthes fait du Japon un tableau vivant et éblouissant, une sorte d’utopie atteignable, un ailleurs idéal à la fois rêvé et retrouvé. Le contact avec une autre culture l’invite à remettre en cause les limites imposées par la logique occidentale ethnocentrique et réductrice. L’Empire des signes apparaît ainsi comme porteur d’une leçon : le respect de la différence et la densification de l’humanité. Pour Barthes, la culture nipponne réussit le prodige de concilier le principe du plaisir et celui de la réalité vécue. De cette coïncidence naît la source de quiétude et d’apaisement qui irrigue tout le recueil.
