En passant par les hétérochronies aussi (3)

Les planètes proches ou lointaines deviennent des hétérotopies-refuges parce que la Terre est devenue inhabitable. L’âge (le temps) de la démocratie a cédé la place à celui de différentes formes de tyrannie secondées par des technologies futuristes. Toutes les sensations et intuitions apocalyptiques s’engouffrent dans ce cinéma d’anticipation où l’humanité n’entreprend de muter ou bien part à la rencontre de civilisations extraterrestres que pour le pire. Les hétérotopies et -chronies qui y fleurissent, à grand coup de décors hypermodernistes ou néo-gothiques y sont les ports d’attache de nos hantises et de nos dépressions projetées vers l’avenir. Le futur a cessé d’être hospitalier à l’utopie.

Du coup, les hétérotopies et les hétérochronies associées aux récits d’anticipation n’entrent plus dans le même type de chaîne d’équivalence qui miroitait dans les quelques textes que Foucault a consacrés au sujet. Certes, Foucault oppose les hétérotopies aux utopies immergées dans une intuition forte de l’historicité comme condition fondamentale de l’espèce humaine, condition dynamique. La possibilité même de l’utopie est fondée sur la capacité des humains comme sujets historiques à se projeter vers l’avant, sur une notion donc de l’Histoire ouverte, inventive, terrain d’expérimentation perpétuel, donc, avec une forme de confiance ou d’optimisme inhérents à cette perspective.

Mais pour autant, chez lui, les hétérotopies entrent dans des chaînes d’équivalence où elles sont associées à des positivités davantage qu’à des craintes ou des cauchemars – là où l’altérité, toujours, permet de contester, réimaginer le présent et de se desceller de celui-ci. L’hétérotopie attire, accueille, fait rêver, remet en question... même les plus simples, les plus modiques d’entre elles disposent de cette puissance d’intensification – l’île, la cabane au fond du jardin, le désert...

Les hétérotopies et -chronies du cinéma d’anticipation évoquent plutôt pour nous toutes sortes de versions de la fin du monde – ou, plus souvent, d’un monde post-apocalyptique dont les traits sont si terrifiants que le mieux que nous puissions souhaiter à nos Nachgeborenen (ceux qui naîtront après-nous) serait de crever plutôt qu’avoir à le vivre ou y survivre. Qui irait réserver sa place dans le train qui poursuit sa ronde infernale autour d’une planète frigorifiée, placé sous la houlette d’une caste terrible auprès de laquelle les séides de Big Brother font figure de doux humanistes – Snowpiercer, version sud-coréenne de la fin du monde tournant comme une toupie sur elle-même [1] ?

On pourrait s’intéresser à la relation entre types (pas genres) de discours et hétérochronies. Le discours révolutionnaire et le discours réactionnaire sont particulièrement nourris d’hétérochronies. Ils y font recours constamment. Le communisme tel que Marx en dessine les contours est une hétérochronie – cette forme du temps libéré où l’individu émancipé de la tyrannie du travail (du salariat) remplit ses journées à son gré en se consacrant à la chasse, la pêche, l’élevage et la critique... Le discours révolutionnaire comme le réactionnaire mettent les temps, les âges, les séquences du passé et du présent, voire de l’avenir en opposition – une bataille des images, rêvées, réenchantées ou décriées, fondée sur des sélections et des jeux d’intensification. Ces types de discours présentent la caractéristique de cultiver les puissances du non-contemporain entendu comme recours contre le présent. Tout se passe comme si le présent, par ses déficiences et ses manques, constituait le terreau propice à des rites d’invocation, convocation, remobilisation d’images du passé suscitant l’apparition d’hétérochronies – la révolte de Spartacus, la Guerre des paysans, la prise de la Bastille, la Commune de Paris, les mutineries de 1917, le combat des maquisards... dans le légendaire révolutionnaire français – et ses équivalents, de la Vendée à l’OAS dans son correspondant réactionnaire. Ces rappels trouvent leur fondement dans l’aperception d’un présent atteint d’une maladie contagieuse contre laquelle ces images (ces moments perdus) seraient appelés à nous immuniser.

Les uchronies relèvent fréquemment d’un parti ludique ou bien sont associées à des expériences de pensée. Dans le premier registre, on se rappelle ces comédies grotesques qui font les beaux jours de la bande dessinée (Astérix) ou du cinéma (Les Visiteurs, Les Monthy Python [2]). Le passé historique qui est envisagé comme une cour de récréation où passé et présent se bousculent et échangent leurs places dans un grand éclat de rire. L’anachronisme et la confusion des époques y règnent en maître, pour la plus grande joie des spectateurs. Dans le second, l’expérience de pensée mobilise les puissances de l’imagination : Philip K. Dick, dans Le Maître du Haut Château [3], imagine les conséquences de ce qu’aurait été une victoire de l’Axe lors de la Seconde guerre mondiale. Il s’agit alors de nourrir une réflexion critique sur le passé échu et la propension des vivants à associer l’échu (ce qui a eu lieu) à la nécessité, voire la rationalité. Il s’agit, en imaginant que les choses auraient pu se passer tout autrement, de congédier l’association paresseuse du cours des choses à la nécessité et à la normalité – de lutter contre la propension à accorder à l’échu une dimension morale – à transformer le passé en fable. Cet enjeu est particulièrement sensible, pour revenir à l’expérience de pensée tentée par Dick, dans le récit démocratique, en Occident, de toute la séquence historique qui s’agence autour de la Seconde guerre mondiale.

Les hétérochronies, elles, obéiraient plutôt, on l’a vu, à une inspiration thérapeutique, voire, parfois, thaumaturgique. Mais aussi bien, elles sont appelées à soutenir l’imagination dans les efforts de celle-ci pour desceller le présent des systèmes d’évidence qui le soutiennent. Les hétérochronies témoignent de ce que l’on peut imaginer des espaces-temps placés sous d’autres régimes d’évidence, soutenus par d’autres axiologies et systèmes normatifs que ce qui, dans le présent, a le statut du naturel – cette indéracinable philosophie (et morale) du présent placée sous le signe du ça va de soi. Le rêve romain des Jacobins les soutient dans leur effort pour enjamber un présent encombré par le cadavre de l’Ancien régime.

Comme cela a été fréquemment relevé, il existe tout un domaine de la politique des noms. Le discours politique invoque et convoque des noms propres qui sont autant de balises de ses orientations, qui sont destinés à soutenir une inspiration en jalonnant une tradition. Mais à y regarder de plus près, la restitution de ces noms ne va pas sans celle de l’époque ou du moins la séquence temporelle qui étaient leur milieu de vie. Ainsi, lorsque dans tel manifeste « appelliste » surgit la mention (en forme d’invocation) des Black Panthers, c’est toute une unité (entité) temporelle qui revient – les Black Panthers comme topos, leur épopée tragique font époque et il suffit de convoquer leur nom pour que toute cette époque resurgisse [4]. Il existe ainsi dans le discours politique des noms ou des syntagmes affectés d’un coefficient magique, pour autant qu’il suffit de les prononcer pour faire renaître, revenir dans le présent une hétérochronie chargée d’intensités – positives ou négatives – la Terreur, le 11 Septembre (2001, mais la mention de l’année est facultative), la Nuit des barricades, l’incendie du Reichstag...

Mais c’est aussi bien le propre de la littérature de réveiller des séquences passées assoupies en inventant des histoires, en construisant des intrigues et en les peuplant de personnages – le nom d’un seul de ces protagonistes pouvant alors suffire à faire revenir tout un pan de mémoire associé à une séquence temporelle, à des images, terribles ou enchantées – ainsi, dans tel roman de Joseph Conrad, le vieux Scevola, « buveur de sang » sous la Terreur – et c’est alors toute cette séquence de la Révolution française placée sous le signe du... terrible, précisément, une des figures du sublime, qui revient [5].

De la même façon que les hétérotopies foucaldiennes ne sont pas des espaces autres comme les autres, c’est-à-dire présentant des singularités qui les distinguent dans la constellation des espaces en général, les hétérochronies sont porteuses de marques distinctives qui les distinguent de simples séquences ou images temporelles portant la marque de l’altérité par rapport au présent. Elles portent la marque de l’altérité dans le sens où elles sont des intensificateurs permettant de conduire des opérations consistant à briser la continuité du temps en le chargeant d’affects contrastés, en en faisant un champ de bataille où sont engagées les subjectivités. Les hétérochronies, comme les hétérotopies font toujours l’objet de surinvestissements et elles deviennent pour nous à ce titre des objets particuliers, pas de simples emplacements ou séquences, mais des enjeux d’engagements et de dépenses particuliers – en ce sens quelque chose qui, toutes choses égales par ailleurs, les rapprocherait des quasi-objets ou des objets hybrides de Michel Serres et Bruno Latour – des pôles d’attraction autour desquels se nouent des interactions serrées et se déploient des sensations, des émotions, des passions fortes, ceci à l’échelle individuelle comme collective ; des objets au sens extensif du terme, dont le propre est de mettre en relation, donc des objets médiateurs.

Jean-François Lyotard définit le postmoderne comme une disposition ou une condition, plutôt que comme un âge à proprement parler, disposition dans et selon laquelle le projet moderne demeuré inachevé et passablement écorné se trouve constamment remis en question [6]. Or, le projet moderne considère comme acquises des formes du temps et de l’espace présentant une certaine homogénéité, si ce n’est uniformité, celle dans laquelle les métarécits trouvent leur milieu et sont appelés à se réaliser ; ceci à commencer par le grand récit de l’émancipation, quelles que soient les voies envisagées en vue de sa réalisation et qui suppose que le progrès repose sur un sol ferme, peu importe lequel – l’Histoire, la technoscience, le développement des forces productives, l’accumulation des richesses...

Le postmoderne est ce milieu dans lequel est éprouvée par les vivants une perpétuelle désillusion, il est l’espace-temps dans lequel ce projet se trouve constamment mis à mal, érodé, délégitimité. En conséquence, les formes compactes et solides qui en constituaient les assises se trouvent fragilisées, disloquées, disséminées. Le sol devient mouvant sous les pas de ceux qui s’en remettaient au « tout histoire » allant de soi en Occident en dépit de la mise à mal répétée, tout au long du XXe siècle, des supposées promesses associées au développement historique ; dans le même temps, la religion de la croissance (le progrès économique), celle du progrès scientifique, voie royale des Lumières déployées dans l’horizon de la connaissance de la nature s’effondrent.

En conséquence de quoi, le temps des humains (le temps social, celui des existences vécues) tend à se diffracter, il devient fragile, il se morcelle, tout comme l’espace (l’environnement spatial) dans lequel leurs activités se déploient. De cette nouvelle précarité découle, selon Lyotard, une désorientation générale dont la perte des grands référents, des repères généraux est le symptôme, la manifestation. De ce trouble nait l’éclectisme, dans une condition générale où prévalent la discontinuité et la bigarrure – les sujets sociaux flottent et glissent dans un environnement où un éclectisme superficiel s’est substitué aux orientations fixées par les métarécits, avec les invariants attachés à ceux-ci – ce que Lyotard appelle « le degré zéro de la culture contemporaine » : « On écoute du reggae, on regarde du western, on mange du Mc Donald’s à midi et de la cuisine locale le soir, on se parfume parisien à Tokyo, on s’habille rétro à Hong Kong, la connaissance est matière à jeux télévisés... » [7].

Dans ce contexte où les must dictés par la mode et l’air du temps viennent remplir les vides laissés par le retrait des grands récits et combler tant mal que bien les puissants effets de désorientations qui en découlent, les hétérotopies et les hétérochronies peuvent être un recours, un pharmakon contre l’éclatement général des formes du temps et de l’espace. On s’y réfugie, on tente d’y trouver de fragiles repères. En ce sens, la condition postmoderne est un sol fertile pour leur éclosion et le succès considérable du motif hétérotopique, tel que l’a présenté Foucault, bien au-delà du champ de la philosophie et même des sciences humaines et sociales, devrait être envisagé sous cet angle aussi – là où, ce qui n’est pas si courant, une passerelle rapprocherait l’auteur de L’archéologie du savoir de celui de Le Différend...

C’est en effet les hétérotopies, comme genre, ne se prêtent qu’à énumération, on peut en faire collection mais nullement les définir synthétiquement qu’en les plaçant sous le principe général de l’altérité, un cadre suffisamment vague pour qu’à chaque hétérotopie ou hétérochronie il soit toujours possible d’en ajouter une autre – et ceci à l’infini. Et ce côté ouvert, inachevé des unes comme des autres, c’est cela précisément qui nous rapproche distinctement de l’éclectisme épinglé par Lyotard comme signe distinctif de la culture post-moderne.

Les industries culturelles, la télévision et maintenant les productions en ligne, boostées par l’intelligence artificielle nous saturent d’hétérotopies et d’hétérochronies produites à la chaîne. Mais leur tournure de diversions, de baumes illusoires appliqué sur un présent de plus en plus invivable saute aux yeux. Elles sont la pure ornementation d’un présent sans qualité, l’envers d’un réel immédiat placé sous le signe croissant de l’inhabitable. Nous n’irons pas sur la planète Mars avec Elon Musk mais nous pouvons, pour un prix modique, rêver chaque soir avec Netflix et Marvel dont c’est le métier (lucratif) de nous procurer notre ration quotidienne d’hétérotopies et d’hétérochronies de synthèse tape-à-l’œil autant qu’inconsistante...
